PEI Ratings for Tiles

Tiles are classified under the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) ratings system for suitability for fixing in a particular area. PEI Class III is for residential light to moderate traffic. PEI Class IV are for residential floors, moderate traffic areas like bathrooms, halls, kitchens and conservatories. Class V are for all residential floors and medium traffic commercial areas.

Moisture Absorption Rating for Tiles

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed a rating for moisture absorption for tiles. If moisture penetration is too high, some tiles may crack. Tiles with W.A. Ratings of 0.5% or less are regarded as impervious. 0.5% to 3% is regarded as vitreous.

Fridge Fan Grills

Fridges often have rear fan grills - these should not be obstructed. The compressor and condenser give off heat and need good ventilation to work correctly and save energy. Fridges should be positioned away from direct sources of heat e.g. direct sunlight, electric stove, radiators et cetera. The room should be well-ventilated and humidity free.

IEC Protection Classes for Electric Appliances

IEC protection classes differentiate protective-earth connection requirements for devices.

Class 0 - non-earthed product, illegal for sale in UK.
Class 1 - connected to "earth" by an earth conductor.
Class 2 - double-insulated, labelled with square inside a square

A-weighted Decibels (dbA ratings)

A-weighted decibels, abbreviated dBA or dBa, measures loudness of sounds whereby the decibel level of sounds at low frequencies are reduced, since the human ear is less sensitive to those sounds (below 1000Hz). It is often used to describe the loudness of fans e.g . microprocessor cooling fans or bathroom extractor fans. 25 dBA is a human whisper in a quiet room.
